When you think of how to hit a harmonic, you think \'choke up the pick like you can\'t any harder, and let one off\'. On the lower strings it\'s not as easy as it is on the higher ones so heres a little bit different way to get \'em that works great on all of the strings and can even shoot out a higher harmonic.
First off, hold the pick like you normally would, between the thumb and index finger. Hold your hand straight so your thumb is pointing away and you can see the back of it. The big outward curve below your thumb is what you are going to use in place of the thumb in the original version of harmonics.

This method has the better effect, you don\'t have to shift your grip on the pick, and ou can hit harmonics in downstrokes AND upstrokes. Remember, though, that where your thumb would hit the string in the pickup area is where the back part of your hand should hit and the pick doesn\'t have to be near that part, so a good suggestion is to move your position up a little bit when you go for the harmonic. You should always use high distortion and the bridge pickup to get better harmonics. If your action is really really low, you might be better off with the original way.
