Ski Tricks
How to Ski out of an Avalanche:
You don't have to be a superhero to ski out of an avalanche. You just have to have a little luck, good balance and the right technique.
1. Do everything in your power to keep your skis underneath you.
2. Get into an athletic survival stance with your knees bent and feet no closer together than shoulder width.
3. Lower your center of gravity without leaning too far into the hill. If you lean too far to one side you are more likely to be swept off your feet.
4. Use your arms to keep you afloat (as if you were swimming) when too much sloughing snow surrounds you.
5. Ski straight to gain speed and stay on top or ahead of the sloughing snow.
6. Turn off to the side and away from the fall line so the snow passes you by on its way downhill.
7. Look above you to make sure no other avalanches are on their way toward you.
